Gainesville is home to Florida's oldest and largest university, the University of Florida. Well-known for its popular university football team the Florida Gators, the University of Florida is located off of University Avenue, the main strip leading to Gainesville's downtown area. Gainesville is one of the state's centers of education, medicine, cultural events and athletics.
