About twenty miles from Tampa, across the Old Tampa Bay (take I-275), is sunny St. Petersburg. Although it remains a mecca for the retired, St. Petersburg has reinvented itself and now attracts sun-seeking vacationers from around the world.
If you're looking to spend a day on the beach, you will find the spectacular white-sand beaches of the Gulf Coast. St. Petersburg features one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Whether you want to sun bathe, splash in crystal blue waters, enjoy a gorgeous Gulf sunset, or just play, St. Petersburg beaches have it all! With the sun and the water, sports, fun, and partying come standard here.
In addition, St. Petersburg's diverse selection of museums, such as the Salvador Dali Museum (the world's most comprehensive collection of the late Spanish painter's work), and a plethora of art galleries have contributed to its emergence as one of Florida's richest cultural cities.
Stroll along the quarter-mile-long pier (known as The Pier) to an inverted-pyramid-like building at its head which holds five stories of restaurants, shops and fast-food counters. The Pier is also home to Great Explorations (a hands-on science museum for all ages), as well as The Museum of History, which modestly recounts St. Petersburg's early twentieth-century heyday as a winter resort.
Nearby, The Museum of Fine Arts holds a superb collection ranging from pre-Columbian art through Asian and African to European Old Masters. The Florida International Museum east of The Pier occupies an entire block and displays exhibitions yearly from renowned museums all over the world.
Getting Around:
The Looper Downtown Trolleys run to the end of The Pier and past all of the downtown attractions every 15 minutes for 25 Cents per person and 10 cents for seniors. The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority/PSTA operates regular bus service throughout St. Petersburg.
